ROBERT L. DAMIANO
As a kid growing up in Boston, my father used to joke and say I had an “Edifice Complex” because I was always making cabins, dog and tree houses. When I was 14, he hired me as a laborer and I was gradually promoted, apprenticing in every facet of the construction business. Some of our projects in the 1970’s reached the ten to twelve million-dollar ranges. During this period, I completed one semester at Worcester Polytech and took several courses at Wenthworth Institute in draftsmanship and basic architectural principles.
At age 20, I chose to go into business for myself and formed my own construction company. A year later I purchased and totally renovated my first three-family home. Over the years I founded several other businesses while also maintaining my involvement in construction and renovation, including Pioneer Fruit and Nut, which I brainstormed, created, expanded and sold. In 1976, I purchased a used furniture business with $6,000 and transformed it into a successful antique shop that branched into a second location. I sold both in 1984 for many times the purchase price, walking away with a valuable eclectic art and antique collection. In 1982, I became the major investor in a 32 unit apartment complex which I personally managed from 1986 – 1989. Throughout my time at the helm, we had a vacancy rate of less than 5%.
In 1988 I started to change my focus and began developing people friendly homes and workspaces, using less-toxic products and techniques. My objective was to create healthy, attractive indoor environments in which people with health issues such as asthma and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) could heal, as well as where healthy people and families could remain healthy. In 1992, I formed the Environmentally Friendly Housing Partnership and began acquiring properties close to the ocean due to the superior air quality. I completed several renovation projects in Revere, MA and other Boston suburbs with personal savings and assistance from Malden Redevelopment Authority, an organization structured to provide low interest loans to assist in the development of housing for low-income individuals. I also renovated a home in Mesa, Arizona, and became a consultant in the field of people friendly building. I have continued this work over the years, and my latest renovation is an ocean front estate in Melbourne Beach, Fl, which was, certified Green through the Florida Green Building Coalition.
